Long before oatcakes were packaged and shipped around the world, they were made in kitchens or out on the hills, often by mixing together just a few ingredients – oats, water and salt. The dough would be rolled out thinly, like a pancake, and cooked on a griddle over an open fire. Once ready, the round oatcake would be divided into four, creating the familiar triangle (sector) shape that lives on today.
